Period windows across the Cotswolds
Cotswold window stock spans four centuries. The oldest cottages have stone-mullioned openings with leaded lights or later small-paned casements; eighteenth-century farmhouses and village houses carry Georgian six-over-six and eight-over-eight sashes with thick glazing bars; and nineteenth-century additions bring larger two-over-two horned sashes. Many properties have all three on different elevations.
Deep stone reveals and heavy walls protect the frame head but hold moisture at the base. Combined with high, exposed sites and long damp winters, this concentrates decay in the sill, bottom rail and the lowest few inches of the pulley stile, while the rest of the joinery — usually slow-grown pine or oak — stays sound for generations.
The other constant is thermal comfort. Cotswold cottages have small windows but a great deal of air leakage, and owners are often told the only fix is replacement. In practice, a routed perimeter seal, sound putty lines and correctly fitting beads transform how a room feels without changing anything a planning officer would object to.
